Lets see if this will work this time without getting shut down.
I"m interested in finding out what it was the Tanners had posted on their web site to stir the Mormon Church up so much as to sue them. Any one know out there?

Yes. It was how inactive members can have their names removed from the records of the church which is no big secret. They were putting copywrited material on the internet. They didn't think they did anything wrong, the Church feels differently.

We have several members in our ward who are inactive and don't want any contact with the church. Because of the my particular job I happen to know the bishop has told them that if they desire to have their names removed from the records of the church all they need to do is write him a letter stating that and he will take care of it. Until they do, we are responsible for keeping track of them and maintaining contact. None of them have ever written the letter. Go figure.

The Tanners and the Mormon Church have had an on going relationship for many many years, The LDS Church usually chooses to ignore whatever it is they have to say or write about. The Tanners deal in documents all the time using copywritten works, reprints, copies ect. and have never been sued. They have the largest collection of original Mormon documents in the world besides the LDS Church.

C.C., You have a bishop that does his job. Not all do. Some have written the letter several time and are still on the roster.
Why does the church not take us off the roster? Numbers would be my guess.

KAN;

Have you written the letter? I guarantee that if you get the letter to me, I can get the deal done for you.

Personally, I don't believe that it is a numbers issue at all. I think that the Church hopes that by maintaing contact with inactive members, perhaps someday they will return to activity. It happens everyday, and the Church has expressed a sincere desire and effort to not only fellowship new members better, but to reach out to less active members and invite them back.

If you are hell-bent, no pun intended, on having your name removed, I can make it happen. I am curious about one thing however, how do you know that your request has NOT been honored? Do the hometeachers and visiting teachers still come around? Do the Deacons try to collect Fast Offerings? Let me know how you would like to proceed.....

Adam:

Good to have you back. Stick around awhile, we could have a good time. Hop on over to the recipe exchange and put in your two cents' worth.

Rock on.

You will know if your name has been removed from church records because they send you written notice. If they do not send you a notice that your name has been removed from church records request that they do so. I had my name removed from the LDS Church records over twenty years ago and they called my mother requesting information so they could forward my records to the new ward I was living in, this just happened this last summer. By the way I did recieve written notice, but they kept my name on the records.

glad your back AdamS. Are you telling us your a bishop? Nice ring-Bishop AdamS. Boy would Shadow get some mileage out of that.

It's been many, many years since I wrote the letter, not that I care one way or another at this point in my life, it's not as important now as it was in my youth.

Come to think of it I haven't had the ward teachers come around in awhile. Hmmm..I sort of thought they were tired of my deaf ear. Maybe it's true. Good things come to those that wait!!!

That is so true! I read in the paper this morning about the daughter of O.C. Tanner. She is an Episcopalian minister. She was raised LDS but succesfully had her name removed from the records of the church in 1975. She is taking an extended leave of absence from her duties in the Episcopal church due to alcholism.

She probably left the church because they took a dim view of drinking and like so many folks, wasn't going to be restricted in their freedom to choose. Just a guess.

Alchoholism does not discriminate, it runs in all religions, races or ethnic backgrounds. It's one of those human things.

I don't like to assume I know anything about someones life, habits, character when I don't. Unlike some of us.

I know and the Lord knows that alcoholism does not discriminate...that is why we have been commanded to avoid it in the first place. It destroys lives and health. Which is why he also warned us in the 1800's in the Doctrine and Covenants Section 89 that tobacco was not made for the use of man, but for the healing of sick cattle. Just how that works, I have no clue and since I don't own any cattle it just doesn't seem important to find out.

I really don't think we need to be commanded to know that abuse of alcohol is bad. Do you think that in order to be good people we need a religion or G-d to tell us how to conduct ourselves?
